What is WebP compression?
WebP compression uses both the VP8 (lossy) and VP8L (lossless) codecs developed by Google, giving it better size-to-quality ratios than legacy image formats.
The VP8 lossy codec uses block prediction and transform coding similar to video compression. It predicts each macroblock from already-decoded neighbors, encodes only the residual difference, and applies adaptive quantization to balance detail retention against file size.
VP8L lossless mode employs spatial prediction, color-space transforms, and entropy coding to reduce file size without discarding any pixel data. Both modes support 8-bit alpha transparency, making WebP one of the few formats with alpha in lossy mode.
WebP's encoding pipeline includes automatic filter strength selection, segment-level quantization adjustment, and optional near-lossless mode that allows minimal, controlled quality trade-offs for substantially smaller files.
Why compress a WebP?
- 01
WebP files are already smaller than equivalent JPGs or PNGs, but further compression unlocks additional savings for performance-critical workflows.
- 02
Modern web applications serve hundreds of images per session. Even modest per-image reductions compound into meaningful bandwidth savings at scale, improving Core Web Vitals scores.
- 03
Progressive web apps and offline-first designs cache assets on device. Smaller WebP files mean faster initial sync and less storage consumed on user devices.
- 04
CDN egress costs are directly proportional to payload size. Compressing WebP assets reduces monthly bandwidth bills without requiring any client-side changes.
- 05
Image-heavy platforms such as e-commerce, real estate, and media galleries benefit from tighter compression when serving responsive images across screen densities, ensuring fast delivery from thumbnail to retina resolution.

Will compressing my WebP reduce image quality?
In lossy mode, compression discards imperceptible high-frequency detail, producing files 25–35% smaller with no visible difference at typical quality settings (75–85). In lossless mode, the output is pixel-identical to the original, since only redundant encoding data is removed.
How much smaller will my WebP be?
Lossy WebP images typically compress to 50–70% of their original size at quality 80. Lossless WebP images may shrink by 10–25% depending on content complexity. Images with large uniform areas compress more than highly textured photographs.
Does WebP compression preserve transparency?
Yes. WebP supports 8-bit alpha transparency in both lossy and lossless modes. Compression preserves the full alpha channel, so transparent backgrounds, drop shadows, and semi-opaque overlays remain intact.
Is WebP supported in all browsers?
WebP is supported in all major modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. Legacy browsers that lack support are now below 1% of global traffic, making WebP safe for production use.
Can I compress animated WebP files?
Yes. Animated WebP files use the same VP8/VP8L codecs per frame. Compression optimizes each frame's encoding and applies inter-frame redundancy removal, reducing file size while preserving animation timing and quality.
Why is my compressed WebP not much smaller?
WebP is already a highly efficient format. If the source was encoded at a low quality setting or has already been through multiple compression passes, there may be little redundant data left to remove. The tool reports when minimal further reduction is possible.
