STL is the standard file format for 3D printing. It describes a model's surface as a mesh of triangles without colour, texture or units, which keeps it simple and universally supported by slicers and CAD software.
3DS
3DS is the native file format of Autodesk 3D Studio for DOS, the predecessor of 3ds Max. It stores meshes, materials, lights, cameras and basic animation in a binary file, but limits each mesh to 65,535 vertices and 65,535 faces, so today it is mainly used to exchange older models.
