What 3DS and DAE files are
3DS
3DS is the native file format of Autodesk 3D Studio for DOS, the predecessor of 3ds Max. It stores meshes, materials, lights, cameras and basic animation in a binary file, but limits each mesh to 65,535 vertices and 65,535 faces, so today it is mainly used to exchange older models.
DAE
DAE is the file extension of COLLADA, an open XML format maintained by the Khronos Group for moving 3D scenes between authoring tools. It carries geometry, materials, skeletons and animation, while glTF is the Khronos format meant for delivering finished models to apps and the web. Blender dropped DAE support in version 5.0.
