3DS
3DS is the native file format of Autodesk 3D Studio for DOS, the predecessor of 3ds Max. It stores meshes, materials, lights, cameras and basic animation in a binary file, but limits each mesh to 65,535 vertices and 65,535 faces, so today it is mainly used to exchange older models.
X3D
X3D (Extensible 3D) is the ISO/IEC 19775 standard from the Web3D Consortium and the successor to VRML. Its XML encoding describes a scene's geometry, materials, lights and interaction, and it can be shown on web pages with players such as X3DOM.
