3DS
3DS is the native file format of Autodesk 3D Studio for DOS, the predecessor of 3ds Max. It stores meshes, materials, lights, cameras and basic animation in a binary file, but limits each mesh to 65,535 vertices and 65,535 faces, so today it is mainly used to exchange older models.
GLTF
glTF (GL Transmission Format) is an open 3D format from the Khronos Group, often called the JPEG of 3D. A .gltf file describes the scene in JSON and can point to separate binary and texture files, and it loads quickly in web viewers and game engines with support for realistic PBR materials and animation.
