3DS
3DS is the native file format of Autodesk 3D Studio for DOS, the predecessor of 3ds Max. It stores meshes, materials, lights, cameras and basic animation in a binary file, but limits each mesh to 65,535 vertices and 65,535 faces, so today it is mainly used to exchange older models.
3MF
3MF (3D Manufacturing Format) is the 3D printing format of the 3MF Consortium, founded in 2015 by Microsoft and other industry members. A 3MF file is a ZIP package holding the model in XML with its units, colours, materials and the placement of every object on the build plate, and it is the project format of slicers such as PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio and Cura.
