How it works
Open the upload tab and drop in your PDF. Files up to 30 MB and about 20,000 characters of text are supported.
Pick one of ten American and British voices and set the reading pace between 0.5x and 1.5x.
Listen to the result in the player, then download it as MP3 or WAV.
Reading a PDF without reading it
Papers, reports, contracts and ebooks arrive as PDFs whether or not anyone has time to sit and read them. Uploading the file here extracts its text, sends it through the same speech engine the typing tool uses, and hands back a single audio file, so a commute, a walk or a washing-up session becomes reading time. It is also the fastest way to give a document an accessible audio version without recording anything yourself.
PDFs with text, and PDFs that are pictures
A PDF either carries a real text layer or is only page images from a scanner or camera. Just the first kind can be read aloud, and the quick test is simple: if you can select and copy a sentence in a PDF viewer, this will work. A scanned PDF has nothing to extract and comes back empty, so run it through the OCR tool first to add a text layer and then bring it back here. Columns, footnotes and headers are read in the order the PDF stores them, which is usually but not always the order you see.

Speech questions, answered
What people ask before having a PDF read aloud. Still have questions? Contact support.
Why did my PDF produce no audio?
It is almost certainly a scan rather than a text PDF. If you cannot select text in it with a normal viewer, there is nothing to read. Run it through the OCR tool to add a text layer, then upload the result here.
How long a PDF can I convert?
Up to 30 MB and roughly 20,000 characters of extracted text, which is about 30 to 40 pages of ordinary prose. Longer documents work best split into chapters or sections.
Can I download the narration?
Yes, as MP3 or WAV. MP3 suits listening on a phone or in a car, and WAV suits further editing. Either way the file is yours with no watermark and no account.
Does it read tables, footnotes and page numbers?
It reads the text the PDF contains, in the order the file stores it, so headers, page numbers and footnotes are usually included. Documents with heavy multi-column layouts or complex tables read less naturally than plain prose.
