How it works
Upload the M4A from your phone, Mac or cloud drive. Files up to 100 MB and 30 minutes of audio are supported.
The AAC audio is decoded and transcribed with a timecode on every line.
Clean up names and terminology inline, then export as TXT, DOCX, PDF, SRT or VTT.
Why M4A files land here
M4A is what Apple devices produce: Voice Memos, GarageBand exports, QuickTime audio recordings and most podcast downloads on iOS all arrive with that extension. People usually meet it after recording something on a phone and then discovering that nothing on their laptop wants to open it. Upload the file as it is, because there is no need to convert it to MP3 first and doing so would only cost a little quality.
M4A, AAC and the .mp4 confusion
M4A is not really a codec: it is an MP4 container holding audio only, almost always encoded as AAC. That is why an .m4a and an .mp4 can be near-identical files with different names, and why some players stubbornly refuse one but happily open the other. It makes no difference here, because the same pipeline reads both, extracts the audio and transcribes it. AAC also handles speech better than MP3 at equal bitrates, so phone recordings hold up well.

What people transcribe
M4A is the default on Apple hardware, so it is the format most phone recordings need transcribing from.
- Turning iPhone Voice Memos of meetings and ideas into written notes
- Transcribing lectures and seminars recorded on a phone or iPad
- Writing up interviews captured in QuickTime or GarageBand
- Making downloaded podcast episodes searchable and quotable

Transcription questions, answered
What people ask before transcribing an M4A file. Still have questions? Contact support.
Can I transcribe an iPhone Voice Memo directly?
Yes. Share the memo to Files or your cloud drive, then upload the .m4a here. Nothing needs converting first, and the recording quality from a modern iPhone is more than good enough for an accurate transcript.
What is the difference between M4A and MP4?
They use the same container. The .m4a extension signals that it holds only audio, while .mp4 usually also carries video. Both work here, and a video file simply has its audio track extracted before transcription.
Is M4A as accurate as WAV?
Close enough that it rarely matters. M4A normally uses AAC, which preserves speech well even at modest bitrates, so a phone recording in a quiet room transcribes about as cleanly as an uncompressed copy of the same audio.
Does it work with M4A files that came from a video?
Yes, and you can also upload the video itself. Either way only the audio track is processed, so file size follows the audio length rather than the picture quality.
