Remove C2PA Metadata

Strip the Content Credentials (the C2PA manifest) from a JPEG, PNG or WebP image and keep everything else: the same pixels, format and file name. It all happens in your browser, so the image is never uploaded.

What are Content Credentials?

Content Credentials are a provenance record in the C2PA format, embedded in the image file: what made it, which tools edited it, and a cryptographic signature over those claims.

ChatGPT and other AI image generators, Adobe Firefly and Photoshop, and some cameras and phones add them automatically. The record can name the app, the organisation that signed it and the edits that were made, and it travels with every copy of the file.

Each format keeps the record in one place: APP11 segments in a JPEG, a caBX chunk in a PNG and a C2PA chunk in a WebP. This tool finds that container and cuts it out, and nothing else in the file is touched.

What it removes, and what it keeps

No canvas and no re-encoding: the file is edited at the byte level, so you download the image you uploaded, minus the manifest.

  • Removes the manifest store

Every APP11 segment of a JPEG manifest, the caBX chunk of a PNG or the C2PA chunk of a WebP is cut out. For a WebP, the RIFF size is corrected to match.

  • Keeps everything else

Pixels, transparency, EXIF, the ICC colour profile and XMP stay byte for byte. The format, the extension and the file name stay the same.

  • Checks its own work

Before the download is offered, the cleaned file is scanned again with the same detector, and that rescan is the result you see.

What it does not do

Removing Content Credentials removes the record of where an image came from. It does not change the image itself.

Invisible watermarks such as Google's SynthID are woven into the pixels rather than stored as metadata, so they survive this tool, and so does anything an AI detector looks for in the picture. An image made with AI is still an image made with AI, with or without its manifest.

Some apps also write a pointer to the manifest into the XMP metadata, and it stays with the rest of the XMP. To strip every kind of metadata, including EXIF, GPS and XMP, use Remove Metadata instead.

Frequently asked questions

Still have questions? Contact support.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and cleaned entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to our servers or anyone else's, and the cleaned copy is saved straight from your device.

What exactly does the tool remove?

Only the C2PA manifest store: the APP11 marker segments that carry it in a JPEG, the caBX chunk in a PNG and the C2PA chunk in a WebP. A pointer to the manifest that some apps also write into the XMP metadata stays with the rest of the XMP.

Does it remove invisible watermarks like SynthID?

No. Invisible watermarks such as Google's SynthID are part of the pixels, and this tool never changes a pixel. A watermark detector will still find them in the cleaned image.

Does removing C2PA make an image human-made?

No. It removes the provenance record, not the history of the image. It does not hide that an image was generated or edited with AI, and it is not a way past AI detectors or platform labels.

Will the image lose quality or any other metadata?

No. Nothing is decoded or re-encoded, so the pixels, transparency, EXIF, ICC colour profile and XMP stay byte for byte the same. To strip all metadata, not just the Content Credentials, use our Remove Metadata tool. Open Remove Metadata.

Which formats are supported?

JPEG, PNG and WebP, up to 100 MB. HEIC, AVIF and GIF store Content Credentials differently and are not supported yet. A file without Content Credentials is reported as such and left unchanged.
